Indian Government jobs that you may apply after 10th class

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Jobs

SSC conducts exams for central government Group B, C and D jobs. SSC conducts the following types of exams for 10th pass candidates:

  • SSC MTS – for 10th pass candidates (some posts are open even for 8th pass students). MTS stands for ‘Multi Tasking Staff’.

Age limit for SSC MTS is 18 to 25 years, i.e. you must be more than 18 years in age, but equal to or less than 25. Also, it does not matter how much percentage you got in 10th. You should just have passed it.

Through SSC MTS you may get recruited in many different government departments, e.g. Income tax, Excise, Custom etc.

  • SSC GD – GD stands for Ground duty.

Through SSC GD you may get recruited in many paramilitary forces, e.g. BSF, CISF, CRPF, ITBP, NSG, SSB etc. It is conducted in 4 stages – Computer based test (CBT), Physical Efficiency Test (PET), Physical Standards Test (PST), and Medical Test.

Age limit for SSC GD is 18 to 23 years.

Note

SSC also conducts the following exams:

  • SSC CGL – for graduates
  • SSC CHSL – for 12th pass candidates

Apart from Central SSC, every state has their own SSCs too, e.g. Uttar Pradesh Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UPSSSC), Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board (DSSSB). You may explore the SSC of your state too for jobs in state-level departments.

Note

The upper age limit in government jobs for 10th pass candidates may be as less as 23-24 for some jobs. But in many jobs its 30 or even more. In some jobs you may apply even till 40 years of age.

Indian Railway

It’s a central government job. The number of vacancies are often large, and so this is often in the radar of many candidates.

There are various group D jobs in Indian railway that are open to 10th pass candidates. The best one is that of ticket collector (T.C.). Some other jobs are:

  • Loco-pilot – But for this you need to have relevant ITI degree. Also, there are assistant loco-pilot vacancies. These are Group C jobs. Age limit is 18-35 years.
  • Technician – You also need relevant ITI degree for this. This is a Group C job. Age limit is 18-35 years.
  • Gangman
  • Clerk
  • Cleaners (Safai Karamchari)
Note

Industrial Training Institute (ITI) conducts technical courses that one can join after passing class 10th. They offer diploma.

Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBFF) Constable

It’s a part of military force of India. So, it’s a central government job too.

  • 10th pass candidates may apply for constable jobs in ITBFF.
  • Age limit is 18-23 years, i.e. you must be more than 18 years in age, but equal to or less than 23.
  • You have to give a written exam and physical test.

They generally recruit constables every 2 years or so. Lakhs of people work in this organization, so number of vacancies are in general high too.

Note

Apart from ITBP, many other military and para-military organizations release such posts too, e.g. RAF, CISF, CRPF etc. In such jobs you will get pension too, which is not available in any other government job.

State Police Constable

It’s a state level job, as police is a state-level organization. Every state recruits constables separately.

Also, Union Territories of India also release vacancies for constables, e.g. Delhi Police. These forces come under the central government.

In most of the police jobs, you will have to give a written test, followed by a physical examination and medical check-up.

Note

Many government job vacancies (both state and centre) are released near the election time. So, be extra vigilant if elections are coming – from 1 year prior to it.

Indian Army soldier

It’s a central government job. The plus point is that you need not give any written examination here. Only physical examination will be conducted (foot race), followed by medical check-up. Special emphasis is given on chest width and height.

Note

Many such government jobs also allow you to study further by taking sabbatical leaves and then later on give you promotions on that basis. Some conduct internal exams for promotions. So, once you enter a government job, many other avenues open up. You may also get motivated to apply for better government jobs.

Postal Department

You must have been to post offices. Yes, you can work here too just after 10th. It’s a central government job too.

The jobs you will get here are:

  • Postman
  • Clerk

However, as not many people use post offices now, due to e-mail replacing letter writing, the number of vacancies in post offices are on a decline.

Bank

Though as a 10th pass candidate, you won’t be able to apply for the post of clerk or PO in a bank. But there are many other posts in a bank that you may apply for:

  • Multi-purpose staff, e.g. for file handling etc.
  • Driver
  • Security Guard
  • Peon
  • Cleaner

Government jobs for 10th pass female

Many jobs in Group D category are available only for men, e.g. peon, guards etc. However, females may apply in most of the other jobs mentioned above. Just have a look at the notification released for a particular job before you apply.

With time, government is opening even many security-related jobs for women. So, stay tuned!

Which stream is best for government jobs after 10th?

As most of us study the same subjects till 10th (except a few choices, say computer or commerce), the stream does not matter that much for 10th level jobs. It matters more for 12th level and graduation level jobs.

There are some jobs after 12th that are only for science stream students, especially for Maths and Science students, e.g. NDA science stream recruitment, DSSSB Lab Assistant etc.

Moreover, if the job you are applying for conducts a written objective test, then your chances of getting selected will improve if you are good in Maths and English. So, focus more on these subjects in school. Even if you are from arts or commerce stream, you should be comfortable with Maths and English, and maybe subjects like Science, Geography, History too. Also, get into a habit of reading a good newspaper on a daily basis for current affairs.

Winding Up

Though we encourage you to keep on studying and complete your 12th and probably graduate too, before you start looking for jobs. As good quality and high paying jobs depend on your education level. A lot many jobs will be open to you once you graduate.

Also, the competition is high for 10th level jobs, because some 12th pass, graduates and even post-graduates apply for these jobs.

However, if you want to discontinue your studies due to some reason, or some urgency, or if you want to get financially independent at an early age, then go ahead and explore the government jobs mentioned in this article.

Best of luck from our side!
